Río Cañas & Río Nimboyores:
Lifelines of the Guanacaste Landscape
“Both the Nimboyores and Río Cañas rivers border and cross through the Guanacaste Air Park property, offering visitors direct access to explore and connect with the rich ecosystems of these two magnificent waterways.”Winding gracefully through the heart of Santa Cruz, Guanacaste, Río Cañas is more than just a river—it is a vibrant corridor of life. Originating in the inland hills near Cañas and flowing westward toward the Pacific coast, this river nourishes a mosaic of ecosystems, weaving its way through tropical dry forests, cattle pastures, and rural communities before eventually merging with coastal wetlands near Playa Junquillal.
Along its journey, Río Cañas supports an extraordinary variety of plant and animal life. Towering ceiba trees, guácimos, and jicaros form shady canopies along its banks, while reeds and aquatic plants create safe havens for birds, amphibians, and insects. In the early morning, it’s not uncommon to hear the distant howls of howler monkeys or catch sight of an elegant white heron fishing in the shallows.
One of its most important tributaries, Río Nimboyores, winds down from higher elevations, bringing with it fresh spring waters that enhance the biodiversity of the region. Nimboyores is a haven for freshwater turtles, river otters, and iguanas basking on sunlit stones. During the rainy season, both rivers swell with life—drawing migratory birds and awakening dormant plant species.
